I believe that the concepts of liberal democracy and the rule of law are founded first upon the belief in eternal moral principles which secure “self-evident” and “inalienable” rights to every human being; and secondly, on the philosophy that each individual is responsible for his own behavior, as well as morally obligated to live within the limitations posed by the rights of others. No circumstance of “class struggle,” “racial preservation,” or any assumed need to go “above the law” can justify abolishing these rights. Human beings can only be properly judged individually, and only through such judg-ment under the due process of law can a government legitimately take forcible action against any person.

But denial of human rights is still commonplace in 1987. When an enemy is perceived to be at a nation’s throat, the tendency is, as Hitler put it, to meet law-lessness with equal lawlessness. But the question is: Can a nation’s moral fiber be stretched to whatever shape seems expedient to preserve it?

We must remember that in essence, a nation is what it stands for, especially when standing for that something becomes most difficult. And the “somethings”for which the United States must first stand are justice, truth, and the value of every human being.

I wish to dedicate myself to promotion and protection of these principles. The essence of individual human rights is absolute and universal. That was as clear and essential to a fourteen-year-old Dutch girl in 1944 as it is to a twenty-one-year-old American college student in 1987, or it was to his school’s founder in 1776.
